Kickoff Ceremony of the Moroccan Scholarship Program at CERN

Geneva, July 23rd 2010
To celebrate the arrival of the two first doctoral students at CERN, a consequence of the agreement of 25 June 2009 between CERN, the Sharing Knowledge Foundation, the Moroccan Universities participating in the LHC Program and the Hassan II Royal Academy, the Foundation had proposed to CERN to hold a ceremony with the main actors of this very promising agreement for Morocco and CERN.

We were thus honored to welcome at CERN on 23 July, Mr. Omar Fassi-Fehri, Permanent Secretary of the «  Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology», and Mr. Said Belcadi, Director of the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research. H.E. Ambassador Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to International Organizations in Geneva, showed his interest by inviting a group of CERN and Foundation representatives to an official dinner on the 22nd July.

After an introduction by John Ellis adviser to the Director General, our two Moroccan guests made a very comprehensive visit (ATLAS Center, LHC Computing Grid and Cern Computing Center, Central Accelerator Control Room and the the assembly hall SM18,  for superconducting magnets).

The Ceremony presided by Pr. Rolf Heuer the Director General of CERN was the occasion to receive several guests around the two young laureates Mohammed Gouighri and Sara Boutouil, among which :
 – Mr. Gaétan Carnot, President of the Carnot Foundation, Abdeslam Hoummada, spokesperson for the Moroccan physicists at CERN, Mr. Mustapha El Bouazzaoui, representing the Permanent Mission of Morocco in Geneva.
–The members of the ATLAS collaboration Mr. Patrick Fassnacht, Mr. Peter Jenni and Mr. Kamal Benslama,
–Several of the Department supervisors of CERN, including Mr. Maurizio Bona, in charge of CERN relations with the International Organizations.,
–Mr. Johann Collot, Co-Director of the  « Laboratoire International Associé », and Mrs Luisa Küppers of Microsoft Research.

This event was the occasion of the signature of a new agreement between CERN and the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology. The participation of the Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Morocco strenghtens the relations between Morocco and CERN. The Sharing Knowledge Foundation is very happy with the great success of this event. The program that has been launched is fully in line with the goals set up by the Foundation.
